It’s a culinary gem with a rich history dating back thousands of years. In this blog, we’ll dive into the world of hummus, exploring its origins, ingredients, variations, and the reasons why it has become a beloved staple in kitchens around the globe.
The Origins of Hummus
Hummus, which means “chickpea” in Arabic, is believed to have originated in the Middle East, with some historical records suggesting it can be traced back to ancient Egypt around 13th century CE. Initially, it was a simple blend of mashed chickpeas and tahini (a paste made from ground sesame seeds), often flavoured with ingredients like garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil. This humble dish was not only nutritious but also easy to prepare, making it a favourite among the region’s communities.
The Ingredients
Hummus boasts a straightforward ingredient list that packs a punch of flavour and nutrition:
Chickpeas (Garbanzo Beans) – The primary ingredient, chickpeas, are a good source of plant-based protein and dietary fiber. They lend a creamy texture and earthy flavour to hummus.
Tahini – a paste made from roasted and ground sesame seeds, adds a rich and nutty taste to hummus. It also contributes healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.
Olive oil – (preferably cold pressed) High-quality olive oil enhances the creaminess and richness of hummus while providing heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.
Lemon Juice – Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds a refreshing tang and helps balance the flavours of hummus.
Garlic – Garlic cloves are used to infuse hummus with a pleasant, slightly spicy kick.
Salt and Spices – Common seasonings include salt, cumin, and paprika, but variations abound, allowing for a wide range of flavour profiles.
Hummus Variations
While the classic hummus recipe is still cherished, the culinary world has embraced this versatile dip, leading to countless variations and creative adaptations. Here are a few popular ones:
Roasted Red Pepper Hummus – Red bell peppers are roasted and blended into the hummus, adding a sweet and smoky flavour.
Spinach and Artichoke Hummus – A spin on the classic dip, this version includes sautéed spinach and artichoke hearts for a delightful twist.
Avocado Hummus – Creamy avocado is incorporated for a silky texture and a vibrant green hue.
Sun–Dried Tomato Hummus – Sun-dried tomatoes provide an intense, slightly tangy flavor that complements the chickpeas beautifully.
Spicy Hummus – For those who crave heat, ingredients like jalapeños or hot sauce can be added to give hummus a spicy kick.

How do I make the Avocado flavour please?
Hi Judith,
You can add 1 x medium size avocado to bring in some additional flavour and extra nutrient to the dish, if you have a fully ripe one, add this mashed Avocado during blending, if the fruit is still firm, you may want to finely slice it and top it to the dish before dressing it with oil and herbs.
Hope this helps.
